The people of Lakes State voted overwhelmingly for secession in the referendum on South Sudan’s self-determination.

The head of Lakes State Referendum authority, Michael Mabor Makuei, announced yesterday that 99.9 percent of the registered voters chose secession, Good News Radio reported.

Dr. Mabor also announced that over 299,000 registered voters took part in the poll, representing a 99.3 percent turnout.

Lakes Governor thanked the people of his state for their good conduct and active participation in the polling.

Chol Tony Mayay showed his gratitude to chiefs, youth, women, elders, religious and civil society, and had kind words for polling agents.

He noted that some referendum officials were in remote areas without water and performed a remarkable task.

The Governor said the independence of South Sudan should be celebrated in Rumbek, because Lakes State was always a very committed partner in the struggle for liberation.
