A UN official said today that resettling returnees who came from the northern part of the country has become a huge challenge.

Georg Charpentier is the UN Resident Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan. He told journalists at Juba River Port today that in Warrap state, many returnees do no want to stay in rural areas despite the state’s efforts to transport them to their allocated land.

They prefer to settle around Kwajok and other cities.

Mr. Charpentier urged the UN agencies, humanitarian groups and state authorities to step up and multiply their response to the returnees’ needs ten times so that they are settled before the rains and not dependent on relief aid.

Mr. Charpentier noted that the UN and state authorities are trying to prevent the returnees from turning into Internally Displaced Persons.
