An SPLM top official condemned the Abyei clashes which left at least 36 people dead over the weekend and pointed a finger to Khartoum.

Dr. Anne Itto said the attacks were carried by Misseriya tribesmen, Popular Defence Forces and Sudan Armed Forces, groups supported by the Khartoum government.

She added that the attacks were meant to discourage the people of Abyei from self-determination.

Dr. Itto called on President Omar Hassan al-Bashir to ensure that the forces his government is supporting stop destabilizing Abyei.

She added that enough blood was shed and the issues should be negotiated through the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Northern and southern leaders called two crisis meetings to resolve the violence that erupted in Abyei over the weekend.
