Attacks on the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Unity State and Abyei areas will not affect the conduct of the Southern Sudan referendum, said a UN official.

The Representative of the United Nations Secretary General to Sudan Mr. Haile Mankorios, said yesterday during a tour of referendum centres in Torit town that the international community continues to monitor the matter, trying to help the police and the armed forces into ensuring that the situation remains normal.

Mr. Menkorios revealed that he had travelled to Eastern Equatoria to assess the security situation and he would continue to Unity state, Western Bahr El Gahzal and lastly to Abyei area. He added that the security threats were mere suspicions and voters turn up was overwhelming.
