GoSS minister for Internal Affairs condemned the beating of women over indecent clothing that took place over the Christmas weekend in Juba calling it an isolated incident that could happen in any country in the world.
Gier Chuang Aloung told the press this morning in Juba that South Sudan is not under Sharia law.Mr Chuang added that each person has a right to dress in whichever way that suits his or her choice.
He added that those who went about naked would be taken to the doctors to evaluate their mental health.
Addressing the press yesterday, the chairperson of Southern Sudan Human Rights Commission, Korbandy Lawrence, said what happened was not the policy of the government neither was ordered from the ministry of Internal Affairs.
Mr. Korbandy said the incident was a move from the enemy “to mess up the noble process of the upcoming referendum.”
Recently graduated police officers were harassing young women in Juba over the long weekend because they were wearing tight cloths.
