Southern Sudan citizens are worried about the fate of women detained in northern prisons due to alcohol brewing in case separation wins the referendum vote.

Eastern Equatoria state advisor for political affairs, peace and reconciliation, Alphonse Muras Chacha, said during a press conference in Torit that the detainees could face elimination when the south secedes.

Mr Muras said he feared that northerners would go on a killing spree as they did following the death of Dr. John Garang.

State minister for Culture and Social Development Magdalena Beato Atiol said about 300 Southern women were reportedly under detention in Khartoum.

Ms. Atiol added that many southerners living in the north were without work and women brew alcohol to get some money for their families.

The Islamic Law in place in Northern Sudan forbids brewing and drinking alcohol.
