The SPLM will not accept any proposal aimed at delaying the timely conduct of the self-determination referendum, a senior official said.

SPLM spokesperson Yan Matthew told SCR News that the postponement of the referendum date would represent a renegotiation of the CPA which he described as risky and something the SPLM can never allow to happen.

Mr. Yan added that his party is studying the requisition presented to the presidency.

The Southern Sudan Referendum Commission chairman Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil was reported to have asked the presidency to delay the referendum for three weeks, citing the very short time remaining until January 9, 2011.
