Believers from different faith communities started yesterday at the UN headquarters a season of prayer for the Sudan.

Episcopalians, Methodists, Presbyterians, Lutherans, Catholics and Mennonites gathered at the UN Church Center in New York to kick off a Friday midday prayer vigil in solidarity with the people of Sudan, Episcopal News Service reported.

Rev. Petero Sabune, the Episcopal Church’s program officer for Africa, said during the vigil that the first line of defence for Christians is prayer.

Those gathered at the U.N. chapel prayed that the referendum takes place without conflict.

They also prayed that officials both in the north and south may govern with open and discerning hearts and minds toward reconciliation and peace.

The participants prayed for the people of Sudan, those who live in fear of persecution and for the refugees and internally displaced people.
