There is no need to extend the voter registration period and the remaining days are enough to correct deficiencies Carter Center observers pinpointed in their report.

Maggie Ray, Carter Center spokesperson, told SCR News that the remaining week for voter registration would be enough for the authorities to correct some problems with the enrolment of citizens for the referendum.

Ms Ray said the Center was very impressed with preparations for the voter registration with the exercise starting on time.

She added that after one week some referendum centres in bigger areas started running out of registration books and ink and had to stop enrolling voters.

Ms. Ray said Carter Center observers noted that many referendum centres did not have identifiers and some people were turned away due to lack of personal documents.

She added that the allocation of referendum centres is an issue in both North and South Sudan. She explained that in the north people complained the centres were not in the places where there were bigger numbers of Southerners while in the South some centres were very far away.

Ms. Ray said that in Uganda some referendum centre staff received threats and stopped reporting for work.
