The fact that Southern Sudan has a Christian majority can facilitate the building up of a more just nation and sustainable peace and address the issues of conflict.
This is the thesis theologian Robert Schreiter presented to a group of Church leaders from different dioceses in the Sudan at the end of a week-long training on peace, justice and reconciliation in Juba.Fr. Schreiter told SCR News that he was impressed with the huge cultural variety in Southern Sudan that has been a historic source of conflict.
He said that the fact that the majority of people in Sothern Sudan are Christian may be of help to address the issue of violence in the region.
Fr. Schreiter said the workshop laid the foundation for a common platform that will allow the participants to work together in network.
Fr. Schreiter stressed that mediation skills were the main tool for Church leaders to foster peace, justice and reconciliation in their places.
He reiterated that social, economic and political development rooted in social principles could lead to sustainable peace in Sudan.
The workshop that concluded today was part of the 101 Days of Prayer for a Peaceful Referendum in Southern Sudan and gathered participants from all Catholic dioceses.
