Juba women took to the streets to march against gender violence at the beginning of a sixteen-day campaign of activism.
Participants at the march received T-shirts and banners bearing messages like “Act against abuse, support a violent-free society” to raise awareness about gender based violence.SCRN News caught up with some women to find out their feelings about the event.
Helen Awate said she experienced gender violence at work and home.
Ms Awate added that she was happy that the women supported one another in the struggle for their rights.
Florence Goro said she was very pleased with the march for women’s rights.
Ms. Goro said women should be treated as equals to men.
She added that violence against was not good.
Undersecretary for GoSS ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare, Margaret Matthew Mathiang, said that violence against women included sexual assault, incest, female genital mutilation, child marriage, wife beating, pornography and psychological abuse.
Ms Mathiang called upon the public to join in the 16 days allocated for gender violence activism.
The rally was organized by UNFPA under the theme Stop violence against women and militarism towards women and the girls.
