Catholic African bishops are supporting Sudan at the critical time of the referendum through prayers.

The pledge comes from the Archbishop Barhaneyesus Souraphiel of Addis Ababa in an interview with Good News Radio.

Archbishop Barhaneyesus said the support of African bishops to their Sudanese counterparts two months ahead of the referendum was very critical.

He added that the authorities in Juba and Khartoum should listen to the voice of people, in particular mothers and children.

Archbishop Barhaneyesus said that Southerners had the right to decide their future for themselves after much suffering.

Archbishop Barhaneyesus provided spiritual assistance to many Southern Sudanese displaced in Gambela, South Ethiopia.

The head of the Catholic Church of Ethiopia was invited to attend the bishops’ plenary in Rumbek.
