Preparations for the referendum are well on time ahead of the voters’ registration due to kick off on Monday.

This was the message from Southern Sudan Referendum Bureau chairperson, Chan Reec Madut during the reception of 20 vehicles provided by international partners.

Justice Reec told the press today at the Bureau headquarters in Juba that after a shaky start the materials and the means for transportation were ready and people had no excuse to register and take part in the plebiscite.

He announced that the Bureau will receive tonight an airplane to monitor the conduct of the referendum.

Dennis Kadima, Director of the United Nations Integrated Referendum and Electoral Division (UNIRED) handed the 20 cars to the Referendum Bureau. He said the UN was mandated by the Security Council to support the referendum process and coordinate international support.

Mr. Kadima thanked the international partners that pledged 63 million US dollars for the Southern Sudan Basket Fund.

Mr. Kadima added that UNIRED will provide the Referendum Committee another 200 cars to support the registration process across South Sudan.

Netherlands, United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Norway, the European Union, Sweden, Denmark, France and Australia are the contributors to the Basket Fund.
