Malakal will receive its power supply from the north and the tender for works to extend the national grid to the capital of Upper Nile will be opened at the end of the month.

Ajuoi Magot Chol runs the Southern Sudan Electricity Board. He told journalists today that Malakal will receive electricity from the North.

Prof. Magot added that Malakal’s connection to the national grid was of value to both north and south Sudan and it would bring union to the region even if the South separates from the North.

Prof. Magot said that the tender for the extension of the national grid up to Malakal will be opened on November 28.

He added that the Electricity Board is also negotiating the import of electricity from Ethiopia.

Prof. Magot said that the Board is running small power plants in Juba, Wau, Malakal, Bentiu, Bor, Rumbek and Yambio.

He added that they are very expensive because they use fuel to produce electricity.

Prof. Magot announced long-turn plans to switch to hydro-power using the Nimule waterfalls.
