A last-minute call to the Vatican prevented the representative of the Pope in the Sudan to take part in the bishops’ meeting that started today in Rumbek.

Bishop Rudolph Deng Majak of Wau and president of the Sudan Catholic Bishops Conference (SCBC) told Good News Radio that Archbishop Leo Boccardi was called for an urgent appointment in the Vatican and the Nuncio would not be able to attend the SCBC plenary.

Bishop Deng said archbishop Boccardi should be back in the country either before Christmas or after the referendum.

He added that the nuncio was also absent at the previous SCBC plenary that took place in Juba last July.
