Two Juba media practitioners represented south Sudan at the UNICEF Regional Media Forum that is taking place in Cairo, Egypt.

The 2010 UNICEF Media Awards recognized achievements by Middle East and North African journalists in promoting children’s issues through the media.

Abdel Rahman Ghandour, UNICEF regional chief of communications for the Middle East and North Africa, said that the forum meant to invest in the media as partners so journalists could cover topics affecting children’s rights in the region.

Mr. Ghandour added that due to the media awards programme journalists are reporting better and more on child’s rights.

Mr. Ghandour said the forum helped illegalizing female genital cutting in Egypt.

He added that a group called Salima is advocating for the ban of female genital cutting in North Sudan.

Mr. Ghandour said the Awards programme has also minimized beatings in Jordan’s schools.
