Climatic changes in southern Sudan are behind widespread hunger in the region, an expert said.

FAO Deputy Emergency and Rehabilitation Coordinator Michael Oyet told SCR News that agriculture in south Sudan depends entirely on rain with minimal irrigation facilities.

Mr. Oyet pointed that drought and floods were the major causes of the severe food shortage in most parts of south Sudan

Mr. Oyet explained that FAO targeted three vulnerable groups, including returnees, internally displaced people and host communities.

He said that the targeted groups were helped in different ways according to their situations to ensure an appropriate response to their needs.

Food security is a major issue for the people of south Sudan given the low domestic agriculture productivity.
