Ugandan rebels hiding in the Central African Republic are moving towards Darfur, a local bishop said.

Bishop Juan Jos√Ö¬Ω Aguirre Mu√¢‚Ǩ’os of Bangassou, Central African Republic, told Fides news that rebels belonging to the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) recently attacked the town of Birao in the north-east of the country.

Bishop Aguirre, a Comboni Missionary from Spain, said he largest group of LRA fighters left his diocese to head north.

He added that a string of attacks indicated the LRA rebels were moving towards the border with Chad and Darfur.

The bishop said that Joseph Kony, the LRA leader, was most probably among the rebels.

Bishop Aguirre explained that a girl named Germaine who was Mr. Kony’s sex slave during three years, managed to escape from her captors and is now in Bangassou recovering from her ordeal.

Germaine was kidnapped in March 2007 near the border with DR Congo. She was 15. She managed to escape last month and took nine days walking in the forest.

The bishop added that Germaine said that among Kony’s rebels there are some 25 girls and boys kidnapped in the area of Bangassou diocese.
