The security situation along the South-North Borders and especially in Abyei Area is deteriorating with the SPLA blaming the northern army for the unrest.

SPLA spokesman, Lieutenant General Kuol Deim Kuol, said in a press release last evening that Monday night four SAF soldiers serving in the Joint Integrated Unit (JIU) went to Abyei market and started firing at random.

He added that one Darfur trader was wounded in the shooting.

The communiqu√Ö¬Ω says that SAF forces with the JIU at nearby barracks responded by firing into air up to 2 AM.

Gen. Deim said the shooting stopped after UNMIS and the Area Joint Cease-Fire Military Committee in Abyei area intervened.

He explained that SPLA officers in the JIUs controlled their forces to avoid direct fighting in the town.

The press release accused SAF of building up troops around at Difra, Nyama, Karasana and Heglig oil fields, saying the north intended to invade and occupy the Abyei Area and parts of Unity State.

Gen. Deim said the SPLA is monitoring the situation carefully and its troops have orders to react responsibly and do everything possible to prevent any clashes.
