The ruling party in South Sudan called upon the UN to recognize a unilateral declaration of independence as a means for Southern Sudanese to exercise their right of self determination in case the referendum is not held on time.
SPLM spokesperson Yien Matthew Chol told SCR News that the UN should recognize any result that might come in case the referendum on self determination does not take place as scheduled.
A Unilateral Declaration of Independence by the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly could be an alternative to the popular consultation on self determination.
Mr. Yien added that the UN should cooperate with the new country in order for it to flourish and prosper.
Meanwhile, Taban Michael Toro, general overseer of Sudan Pentecostal Church, urged the UN Security Council to monitor the referendum for the exercise to be free and fair and held on time.
Mr. Taban said that both Southerners living in the North and Northerners in the South would need UN protection during the referendum.
