Mr. Onyoti is a member of Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement for Democratic Change SPLM-DC which is under the leadership of Lam Akol. SPLM-DC has the largest seats from the opposition parties in the SSLA.
Referring to the south Sudan Interim constitution article and regulation SSLA, speaker Wanni Igga said he does not have any objection to the election by SPLM-DC members of Onyoti Adifo Nyikwech as the leader of the opposition.
He called upon MPs to accept the proposal of DC saying it is not a debatable issue according to the constitution.
On his part, the newly nominated opposition leader said it is the first time in the history of south Sudan to have a leader of opposition in SSLA.
He noted that the latter signifies the real democracy that is guiding the principle of an inclusive government.
Mr. Onyoti added that his acceptance to the post is recognition of the government of south Sudan. He charged that his party was accused of not recognizes nor respecting the current government during the first democratic April elections.
The position was a kick between the SPLM-DC and the candidates who contested as independent during the April elections.
Consultations with the Goss minister of legal affairs ruled that the independent candidates do not constitute any political party and only SPLM-DC qualified as the largest opposition political party in the August house
The leader of opposition carries the fourth rank in the government of south Sudan. Mr. Onyoti is expected to appoint the chief whip of the opposition in line of the constitution.
