ONGOING CLASHES IN YIROL, LAKES STATE, LEAVE OVER 30 DEAD AND SCORES INJURED

Clashes between Dinka Atuot and Jang communities in Yirol, Lakes State that started on Thursday have claimed at least 30 lives and left several dozens injured.

A local source told Radio Good News over the phone that cattle rustling is behind these fatal fighting.
However, other sources have said on condition of anonymity that this particular fighting is politically instigated.
The fighting which is taking place at Wunthou, some 30 kilometres East of Yirol town, is said to have been most fierce on Sunday despite the presence of Lakes State Deputy Governor Mr. David Nok Marial.
A Comboni Missionary working in Yirol told Radio Good News that the town hospital was full of people with injuries from gunshots mainly from Yirol West County.
Fr. Titus Makokha added that the injured from Yirol East County were taken to Nyang Hospital while others sought treatment in the Mission Hospital at Mapuordit.
Fr. Titus also said that there was a much looting in Yirol town and along the Rumbek-Yirol road.
He added that trucks bringing goods to town were specially targeted by looters.
Three lorries carrying military personnel from Juba arrived in Yirol Monday morning to restore calm in the region.
