A plane carrying about 50 passengers crashed today while landing at Wau airport. The aircraft coming from Juba went down in Wau airport at around 9.45 AM. Only the crew was injured.
Joseph Akot Mayang, the acting manager of Wau airport, told Radio Voice of Hope that the plane crew was informed about the conditions and the situation of the runway before the aircraft approached the landing point.
The manager explained that the Feeder aircraft landed on its left wheel, ran out of the runway and hit a heap of soil.
The plane was damaged.
Mr Akot said he got instructions from Juba to close the airport until the investigation team arrived.
The Medical Director of Wau Teaching Hospital, Marcelo Gabriel, confirmed that only five people from the crew suffered injuries in the crash.
He added that all were in stable conduction except a woman assistant who broke one leg.
Dr Gabriel said all the victims were given first aid at the hospital and are being transferred to Khartoum at their request.
Wau airport is under reconstruction but functions normally.
This was the first incident since the reconstruction of the airport started.
