The Eastern Equatoria State governor Louis Lobong Lojore has on Tuesday directed the newly appointed county commissioners to improve revenue collections.

While presiding over the swearing in ceremony of the newly appointed county commissioners, Lobong directed the officials to improve on revenue collection across their counties.
the Governor mentioned that counties, Payams and bomas were endorsed because they are able to raise funds to sustain themselves.

“Improve revenue collections in your county, people will say money did not come but the money are with them with the people, when the people were applying for a county, payams or the boma they always said and one of the criteria is that our payam is capable of raising the funds to sustain itself.”

In our counties it said to be that there are a lot of resources that is the reason why that county and the state was approve because they are capable of managing themselves they can manage to collect money, we said before that we have natural resources like forest and agriculture their people who are supposed to pay taxes now we are eying to Juba and the counties are eying to the state so you must go and sit to design on how to improve your revenue collections, now oil money is no more,” he added.

The Eastern Equatoria State governor tells the newly appointed officials to enlighten the public at the grassroots to embark on agriculture to tackle the issues of the high exchange rate of the US Dollars.

He further advises cattle keepers to make use of their livestock improve production in order to produce enough milk.

“The issue of the dollar that people are crying, dollar will never come down against our pounds if we don’t produce, if we don’t practice agriculture the dollar will continue going high.”

It is when you are task that we need to continue enlightening our people, you are at the grassroot with the people. You should encourage people because the medicine of the dollar is agriculture. We should plant what can be enough for ourselves and the one that can be sold and for those who are keeping livestock let us make use of our livestock for commercial purposes not for marriage alone we should sell some of our livestock’s, we must also improve the production of livestock to produce enough milk,” he said.

The speaker made the remark during the swearing in Ceremony of three commissioners and the deputy chairperson for insurance regulatory commission on Tuesday.

The Mayor of Juba City Council (JCC), Michael Ladu Allah-Jabu, has given the order to tax collectors to stop the unnecessary closing of shops.

He directed the tax collectors to always issue a demand note for 7 days and if the trader fails to obey, the court will summon a business person or close the shop.

Mayor’s directive came during a meeting of the leadership of Juba City Council and the traders on Wednesday.

Traders raised concerns and presented their grievances to the leadership of the Juba City Council chaired by Mayor Allah-Jabu and his two deputies.

Some traders accused some JCC officials of applying brutality when collecting taxes including beating up traders and sometimes forcefully closing down their shops.

One businessman who chose to be named Abdallahi testifies that some shopkeepers are even charged for overstocking their shops with goods.

He claims Juba City Council tax collectors have been given too much power which they misuse when discharging their duties and levies unnecessary taxes on goods beyond the rate agreed upon.

Abdallahi calls on Juba City Mayor to make the rates schedule public and transparent to the traders and also enable them to know the fine or charges for each offense to reduce over-taxing.

Reacting to the traders’ complaints, Michael Ladu Allah-Jabu, the Juba City Council Mayor issued an order banning all unnecessary closures of business premises by tax collectors.

The Mayor of the Juba City Council directed the Chief Executive Officer for Administration to implement the rate schedules and make them public.

Michael Ladu Allah-Jabu urges the traders to always raise their grievances to their chairpersons instead of staging protests and demonstrations within the country.

He calls on foreign traders to resolve their problems in the office of the Juba City Council office rather than going to their Embassies or another level of government.

Last week, the foreign traders closed down their shops and businesses as a way of protesting against numerous taxes levied on their businesses by tax departments in the country.

The government of Lakes State says in its first extra-ordinary meeting for 2022 was informed that State Revenue Authority collected 8,461,418 SSP, 4,273 US Dollars.

He explained that the money was collected in January and February 2022 and deposited the money in its account, Good News radio reported.

Governor Tueny asked the council of ministers to decide how to use the money.

Lakes State Acting Information Minister William Koji Kerjok says the report was meant to update the public on the economic sector’s progress.

He attributed the collection to the competence and independence of the State Revenue Authority to oversee, collect, and promote transparency and accountability of state taxes.

Koji said the council agreed to use the money for service delivery in all state government levels.

Koji urges the public and civil organization to build trust with their own government; as Lakes state government is working hard to make sure that its people are protected.

The government has appreciated Revenue authority work in collecting such convincing figures.
