The newly appointed administration of Bahr el Ghazal University has announced a plan to introduce new Colleges but could not specify when this promise could be fulfilled.

Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration and Finance Prof Dr. Kuel Maluil Jok reveals more colleges will be launched to uplift the standard of the University.

Dr. Kuel Maluil Jok urges the students to cooperate with the new administration to ease the university’s development.

He warned that the administration will be discouraged when there is a non-academic conspiracy that will weaken their strength.

Kuel Maluil Jok mentions that their main aim is to make Bahr el Ghazal University look like other institutions in Africa for better learning.

The former deputy Vice Chancellor is concerned about Western campus Maluil Jok saying nobody can pretend to become superior to take it from the University administration.

The new Vice Chancellor of UBG Prof Dr. Arneo Barnardo Ochi has welcomed his appointment and points out that their administration will focus on quality Education.

He promised to equip the academic staff through capacity building and training to ensure they do their work effectively.

Four hundred young men and women in Western Bhar el Ghazal state, graduate from five Technical and Vocational Education Training after completing four months.

The project was implemented by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in partnership with the Women Advancement Organization and the government of South Sudan.

Executive Director for Women Advancement Organization, Suzan Pasquale, said that the ceremony marks the 15th graduation in South Sudan and the 8th in Western Bahr el Ghazal.

He believes that such technical skills will promote changes and development in the country

Graduates representative, Daniel Bol Goc, acknowledges and appreciates the organizations and the state government for the great achievements they bestowed upon them.

“The training offered us a wider opportunity and had made us be job creators rather than job seekers,” he narrated.

Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sport, Mohammed Ali Goni, encourages the people to be independent of themselves and use such skills to boost their livelihood.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and the governor representative, Rodulf Andrea Ujika, recognizes the necessity of having such skills as a youth, citing that technical knowledge is one of the things that helps the government in achieving its mandates.

“Therefore, the youth needs to apply to the Ministry of Public Service to be employed and work for the government,” he reveals.

The graduation which took place on Thursday at Wau Youth Center combines 400 graduates among them 165 students are from agribusiness, and 34 students from catering and hospitality.

Eighty-one students from auto-mechanic, 19 students from masonry and building, 101 students from the computer, and out of the 400 graduates 42 percent were female students.

The National Ministry of General Education and Instruction has announced the re-opening of schools after a temporary closure of one week to observe the heat wave across the country.

According to the press statement seen by Catholic Radio Network, all the schools will reopen on 2nd April 2024, with some measures put in place during class sessions.

The government has warned schools to minimize allowing students to do sports activities unless early in the morning.

It suggests indoors, ventilating classrooms, providing water for learners during school time, monitoring children especially the young ones for signs of heat exhaustion, and heatstroke, and alert medics in case of such cases.

“We are delighted to inform the public that the government has decided to re-open schools from Tuesday 2 April 2024, however, because of the unpredictability in the climate, we caution teachers in schools to adhere to the following measures which the ministry has put in place.”

The National Minister of General Education and Instruction Awut Deng Acuil directed the state authorities to implement the actions outlined in the statement.

Hon. Awut warned any school that contravenes those measures will be de-registered.

“We at this moment direct state authorities to implement the actions outlined in the press statement. A school that will contravene these measures will be de-registered.”

She states that her ministry in conjunction with the Ministry of Health and Environment and Forestry will continue to observe the weather situation and advise accordingly.

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry monitors daily temperature across South Sudan and now has revealed a steady dropping in the heatwaves.

The forecast suggests a lessening of heat waves and the start of the rainy season expected in the subsequent weeks.

Last week Friday 15th March 2024, the Ministry of General Education ordered the closure of all schools in South Sudan, as it prepares for a heatwave in which temperatures could reach an exceptional 45C (113F).

Authorities said by then children should stay indoors and that the extreme weather could last at least two weeks.

The Minister of Presidential Affairs, Hon. Joseph Bangasi Bakasoro has appealed to South Sudan Civil Societies Organizations (SSCSO) to be more objective in their role as ‘voice of the voiceless.

Hon. Bakasoro said lack of objectivity in reporting will lead the country to what he terms as “misdirection.”

He discourages human rights groups from allowing donors to dictate their activities and reports.

The Presidential Affairs Minister encourages Civil Societies to focus on what affects the South Sudanese masses rather than putting their interest first.

He underscored the need for SSCO to be educated on their role to avert “copy and paste” situations.

Minister Bakasoro represented President of the Republic Salva Kiir Myardit who was unable to attend the Civil Societies conference in Juba on Tuesday 19th March 2024

The SSCO Forum at Pyramid Continental Hotel brought several stakeholders including religious leaders, politicians, Non-governmental Organizations, and Foreign Diplomats.

The Chairperson of the National Democratic Party (NDM) Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin, demanded that Civil Society Organizations engage peace partners in dialogue to pave the way for peace.

Dr Lam said lack of dialogue among the peace parties affected the smooth and timely implementation of the Peace agreement.

Lam cited interchange as the only viable means to deliver South Sudan from falling into political turmoil in the future

Meanwhile, Head of African Union (AU) delegate, Joram Bisworo pledges his organization’s support to the expected National Election.

Joram challenged the International community to support the government’s effort to conduct a peaceful election.

He discourages the idea of some members of the International Community who prefer ‘pointing fingers’ at the mistakes of the government instead of supporting them.

The University of Juba welcomed a new vice chancellor, Prof. Robert Deng Mayom, and bid farewell to the outbound vice chancellor, Prof. John Apurot Akec.

Outgoing Vice Chancellor, Professor John Akech Apurot hands over office to the new Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Mayom in a decent farewell ceremony organized by the University of Juba on Friday 15th March 2024.

The new Vice chancellor came in together with his two deputies, Prof Justo Wani, deputy for Administration and Finance, and Prof. Isaac Cleto Rial, deputy for Academic affairs respectively.

Prof John Akech in his remarks encouraged the incoming Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Deng, to be a multidisciplinary manager.

“Don’t be a hedgehog, be a fox. The hedgehog knows one big thing. The fox knows many small things.” Prof told the new Vice chancellor in the words of Isaiah Berlin an English Philosopher of the 20th century.

Akech later announced that the new Vice chancellor offered him to be the Project Director of Mayardit Academy for Space Sciences, a project which he started in 2022  and in his statement,  he wholeheartedly accepted the assignment and promised to get the space project off the ground.

“Pleased to announce that during the handover ceremonies on Friday our incoming Vice Chancellor, Professor Robert Deng Kuoirot offered to assign me as the Project Director of Mayardit Academy for Space Sciences, a challenge that I accepted with great pride and gratitude. I will do my very best to get our space project off the ground.”

However, Prof Taban Lolyong who was among the senators slammed Professor Akech for not improving the academic standard of the University of Juba but gave him the flowers for developing the infrastructure, which in his words, he said “it looks like a learning institution compared to the old one.”

The New vice Chancellor and his team jointly promised to work as a team to deliver services to the University within their term of tenure.

Prof Mayaom in his speech, told the deans of studies at the University of Juba to start delivering to the learning standard of the University.

He ordered the deans who allegedly did not produce the results of their students for the last 7 months to make sure that the results were in within the next seven days.

The Governor of Western Bhar el Ghazal State, Wau is calling on the people to support the education of their daughters and encourages the young girls to select a variety of fields as their career choice.

Sarah Cleto Rial narrates that, people need to end some of the gender disparities by encouraging females to join technical fields, mathematics, engineering, being scientific researchers, and others.

She believes that education has no age limit and requests women in the state and South Sudan at large to continue with the learning process and assist their children in their education journey.

Cleto Rial emphasizes opportunities for scholarships that usually come to the state and encourages females to apply similarly to males to benefit and get quality education.

She calls on the people to stand for and support their daughters whenever there are such opportunities so that there will be equality in the number of boys and girls who are getting scholarships.

The state Governor was addressing the gathering at the Youth Center in Wau.

His Eminence Michael Cardinal Czerny is urging young people in South Sudan to recognize the fact that their education and their development is their first primary responsibility.

Cardinal Czerny said youth shouldn’t give up to pursue their studies even if the opportunities are few because they will contribute to the positive societal change.

“The most important thing I think for the young of this Country is to accept the fact, to recognize the fact that their own life, their education, and their development is first and primarily their own.”

In another word, even if opportunities are few, the difficulties are great, the facilities are poor, that doesn’t mean young people should give up educating themselves and preparing themselves to make a real contribution to their society.”

The prefect for the Dicastery of Integral Human Development at the Vatican adds that to react with violence is to betray one country.

Cardinal challenges the young people of South Sudan to take the future into their own hands and take the first central step in preparing themselves to contribute to the Country.

“So I would not only encourage but challenge the young people to take the future into their own hands and make the first central step which is to prepare themselves to contribute to the society.”

Cardinal Michael narrates that his visit to South Sudan is to experience a better or more hopeful South Sudan than what they have in the media in North and West Europe.

I’m happy to go back and tell Pope Francis that the beginning of the Peace pilgrimage that he brought to South Sudan has started yelling its fruits,“ said Czerny.”

“The Holy Father was here a year ago, on a pilgrimage of peace, and he would want to hear what the pilgrimage of peace has produced, the fruits that it’s bringing. And I’m happy to go back and say that there are beginning of fruits.”

The prefect for the Dicastery of Integral Human Development at the Vatican imagined a statement during his departure for Rome

The South Sudan National Spelling Bee made its first appearance in the prestigious African Spelling Bee competition for the first time since the inception of the competition in 2016.

The 2023 competition of the African Spelling Bee was held in Uganda’s capital, Kampala, from the 6th to the 10th of December 2023.

South Sudan was represented by a five-member team from Juba Diplomatic and Alekma Academy schools with support from the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan.

The competition drew 48 spellers from 11 participating countries including Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa, South Sudan, Côte d’Ivoire, Lesotho, and Botswana.

Speaking after their return to Juba, one of the Spellers from the South Sudan team, Habiba Mui Jacob said the competition allowed her to learn from other participants across the African continent.

“I am full of joy and had an unforgettable pleasant experience during my participation at the African Spelling Bee 2023 in the name of my country, South Sudan.” Habiba said,

The head teacher of Alekma Academy, Gabriel Majok thanked the participants, organizers, and those who supported the process and encouraged them to do more and better in the next edition.

“All in all, things will certainly not be the same again after this experience,” Majok highlighted.

Meanwhile, the Program Manager of Excellence Foundation who is also the Project Lead for the South Sudan National Spelling Bee, Emmanuel Bida Thomas says even though South Sudan didn’t win on their first trial, the team and the participants have gained valuable experience that will shape them for the next Edition.

“South Sudan couldn’t scoop any awards, but as first-timers, the team gained valuable experience that will shape its participation at the 7th African Spelling Bee in Nigeria next year,” Thomas stated.

According to Bida, the Junior Category Winners for the competition are from South Africa, Uganda, and Zimbabwe while the Senior Category Winners are from Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe.

According to the African Spelling Bee organizers, it is the first time South Sudanese teachers and spellers have made a debut in this continental competition.

The participating team returned to Juba on Monday, 11th December 2023 immediately after the competition concluded.

The Excellence Foundation for South Sudan said in a statement extended to this publication that it plans to maintain consistent participation in the African Spelling Bee and to expand the South Sudan Spelling Bee beyond Juba.

The African Spelling Bee 7th Edition is expected to take place in Nigeria next year.

The Catholic Bishop of the Torit Diocese in Eastern Equatoria state calls the community elders, and intellectuals to advocate strictly for children’s education the society.

These calls came at the time South Sudan was fighting the illiteracy rate among the people.

Bishop Emmanuel Bernardino said that any community or society that does not takes their children to school to get educated is a potential threat to the future of the country.

He cites that Education is a strong weapon that can change the behaviors and the attitudes of the people.

“Any society that exists without education is a threat to the future because the current conflict of guns will finish but the bigger conflict is going to be illiteracy because if you are not educated you will not change the situation of your people, education changes the behaviors and attitudes of the society members” Bishop Narrates.

His Lordship Emmanuel points out that as Christians our education should impact positively on our lives.

He is stressed about the behavior and attitudes of some intellectuals in the society that are doing things that are astray despite their education.

The Catholic Prelate was speaking to Voice of Hope Radio, one of the Catholic Radio Network station in Wau.

A total of 69,573 candidates have registered for this year’s CPE examinations, with 38,575 males and 30,998 females in 1,665 schools across 551 centers.

The Vice President for Service Cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol rang the bell at Buluk Model Primary School for the start of the examination.

The Deputy Chairperson of the Education Committee in the Reconstituted Transitional National Legislative Assembly, (R-TNLA), Honorable Rosa Adau Deng, encouraged the candidates to be confident and take the examinations as a normal routine.

Deng lamented that there is no generation without education of the children because the best country in the world is one which has prioritized education.

The Deputy Minister of General Education and Instructions, Martin Tako Moyi appealed to the candidates to stay away from examination malpractices and threatened to nullify the results of schools that would be found involved in such examination acts.

The Deputy Minister also urges the invigilators and the security personnel not to allow cheating, because it is destroying the children and the future of the country.

Tako warned the candidates against buying fake exam papers that might surface on the internet.

The Vice President of the Service cluster, Hussein Abdelbagi Akol advised the candidates to take the examinations with sincerity, honesty, and confidence.

According to Abdelbagi, the country lost credibility in the examinations across the region due to rampant cheating cases and several other examination vices that often take place.

The Vice President directed the Ministry of General Education to thoroughly investigate and punish any school involved in the examination malpractice.

As the exercise progressed, there was one examination center in Uror County that had been affected by floods and 24 candidates could not take their examination.

The Director of the Association for Media Development in South Sudan (AMDISS), Ms. Ayaa Irene Lokang is asking the newly graduated students from Media training to practice journalism in their respective states.

Irene said most students who completed the course never returned to their origin after graduating from the Media Development Institute.

“The only problem is that, whenever people come to study at MDI and they get access to be deployed within the town, they get to remain there, they don’t go back to the States.”

“We have about five students who came from the States and I hope that they will graduate and go back to their different media houses in the state to practice from there,” Irene said.

Gerry Allan the acting principal at MDI said the knowledge gained from the institute is to make a difference and bring change in society through the graduates.

Gerry believes the newly graduated students will make positive changes across the nation if they depart to the different states

“I am privileged and heartened to celebrate this special occasion with you as you graduate and join the communities where you live to make a difference and bring change. You have learned important problem-solving life skills and that will save you well in your career,” said Allan.

Meanwhile, the Director of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Darene Manning challenged the graduates to save the citizens with credible information. He said accurate reporting promotes informed decisions in society among the citizens.

“As a journalist, you are called to save your fellow citizens to provide credible and accurate news and information, a journalist is also to be dedicated to holding freedom of expression one of the most important rights that citizens hold in a democracy.

The country director for Norwegian People’s Aid-NPA, Hilde Bergsma applauded the female students for joining journalism at MDI saying they will amplify the voice of women in the society

“We know that issues to women and girls are different and we know these eight new fresh journalists will be a better voice representing the female population.”

On Wednesday, the Media Development Institute graduated 23 students who completed one year of training in journalism.
