Chadian president Idriss Deny called the possible independence of Southern Sudan a disaster for Africa.

South Sudan is scheduled to hold next year a referendum to decide whether it will secede from the rest of the country.

That right has been laid down in the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

President Deby of Chad pointed out that more countries have a north and a south, part Muslim and part Christian.

He fears the disintegration of the Sudan can be a precedent for other countries.

In an interview with the magazin Young Africa, Mr. Deby questions whether the Khartoum government would agree with the loss of the south with its oil and minerals.
