The President of the Sudan announced on Monday that he was setting all political prisoners free.

The announcement came on the eve of the sentencing of a number of people who were accused of trying to bring the Government down but does not specify whether the plotters were to be set free.

Omar Al Bashir told the National Assembly during its speech to open a new session that he decided to free all the political prisoners and renew his commitment to all political powers about dialogue.

Mr Al Bashir said he would continue communication with all political and social powers, including armed groups, for a national dialogue which will bring a solution to all the issues.

The President’s statements followed an offer Vice President Ali Osman Taha made to the SPLM-North and to all opposition political parties to join a constitutional dialogue.

The SPLM-North rejected the invitation and wants political negotiations with Khartoum within the framework of UN Security Council Resolution 2046.
