Children with disabilities are a potential in the community despite negative attitudes towards them.
Across organized a training for teachers with special skills after various researches found out that children with disabilities were discriminated.Lagu Simon, the sector head for Inclusive Education and Community Base Rehabilitation, told radio Easter that Across carried a research in 2008 in Mundri and Yei River counties and found out that a number of children with disabilities were not at school because parents had negative attitudes towards their education.
He pointed out that his organization is being challenged by the transfer of trained teachers on special education skills and by the negative attitude of parents.
Mr Simin said the program is assessing schools with disabled pupils to sees their needs, adapt the buildings and place teachers with special skills.
Chandigha John, who facilitated the teachers’ workshop, called for ongoing awareness of the community about the importance of children with disabilities.
He said people had to change their attitudes and reduce the impact of disabilities for children to participate actively in community life.
David Malish, deputy head teacher of St. Joseph Primary School, appreciated the initiative taken by Across to alert the community for such important issues.
