The AU-UN Peace Mission in Darfur, known as UNAMID, has formed two teams to coordinate efforts to free four keepers, the mission announced.
The four UNAMID peacekeepers who were reported missing in Nyala, South Darfur, more than four days ago, remain unaccounted for.UNAMID chief Ibrahim Gambari announced that Crisis Management Teams have been established in Nyala, and at the Mission’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, to coordinate efforts to secure the peacekeepers’ safe return.
UNAMID’s senior leadership is also in constant contact with the Government of the Sudan, which has set up a similar response team.
Security was beefed up to ensure the safety of UNAMID staff in South Darfur, including regular checkpoints on roads, as well as convoys to escort staff members required to move after dark.
