Abyei Civil Society Group has conducted its first conference to address issues facing the area and make assessment in preparation for the coming referendum in October.
Civil Society Group Chairman, Rou Manyiil, said the aim of the conference is to clear the challenges the citizens are facing in Abyei area.He added that the conference focused on issues concerning the preparation for the upcoming referendum.
Dr.Manyiil explained that the conference has encouraged the region residents to go back to their normal life.
The conference has also given the green light for the citizens who are still living in neighbouring states to return to their original homeland.
Dr. Manyiil said Abyei citizens living in Juba, Wau, Warrap, and Aweil, will return to their respective places to prepare for the upcoming referendum.
He appealed to the national Government and the UN for emergency support to assist Abyei citizens.
He added that Abyei civil society is working hard to bring back all citizens before the referendum.
The conference gathered 350 participants including religious leaders, national and state government officials and some NGOs working in the area.
