South Sudan Women Empowerment Network announced a national women conference for the second week of April to discuss the Transitional Constitution.

Director Palek Matthew Obur told the press on Thursday that during the conference women will compile their recommendations into one document to be submitted to the Constitution Review Commission.

She added that the recommendations are women’s views on the Transitional Constitution that they wanted to see incorporated into the Permanent Constitution.

Ms Obur said women in the states strongly recommended that marriage age should be clearly defined to avoid early and child marriage.

She added that women proposed that marriage age should be between 20 and 25 and the proposal will be submitted to the Review Commission for incorporation into the Permanent Constitution of South Sudan.

Ms Obur described the undefined marriageable age in the Transitional Constitution as a gap because leaving it undefined encouraged girls to be married at early age.

She explained that they were advocating for a Family Act in South Sudan to regulate family matters.

Ms Obur said her network, South Sudan General Women Association and South Sudan Women Lawyer Association have set up recommendations from the ten states of South Sudan for the upcoming Women Conference.
