JICA, Japan International Cooperation Agency, is financing the improvement of community roads in Malakal, the capital of Upper Nile.

The development is part of the “Project for Comprehensive Planning and Support for Urgent Development on Social Economic Infrastructure in Malakal Town” that started in 2012.

In a press releases issued on Monday, JICA said the project is expected to contribute to lay a firm foundation and a roadmap to achieving mid-term social economic infrastructure and human resource development in Malakal Town.

The total cost of the project is 620 million Japanese Yen which is equivalent to approximately 7.5 million US Dollars or 30 million Pounds.

The project has three components: reconstruction and improvement of Malakal River Port, construction of small-scale water supply system in Malakal and community roads improvement.

Most of the community roads in Malakal are not passable during the rainy season causing disruption of normal life and movement in the town.
