A government official said peace studies must be part of the national curriculum to allow children to grow in a peaceful environment.
Director General for Alternative Education System in the ministry of General Education Kuol Atem Bol told reporters in Juba that peace education is very important and should be included in the national curriculum, Bakhita Radio reported.He said peace studies would allow children to learn to grow in peaceful coexistence and avoid tribalism.
UNICEF country representative Yashmin Ali Haque said in June 2011 children were consulted about their expectations after the independence and they singled out education, peace and security.
She added that children should see their expectations addressed.
Ms Haque said the enrolment of children is growing every year but many schools face threats of looting or are occupied by displaced people not allowing pupils to have their classes.
The ministries of General of Education and Culture, Youth and Sports organised a workshop to meet the current challenges and build a more responsive approach to education in South Sudan.
UNICEF supported the workshop.
