Jimmy Carter, the former American president and election observer, suggested the voting period could be extended for one or two more days in order to allow everybody to take part in the elections.

Mr. Carter, the leader of The Carter Center, arrived today in Juba to visit some voting centres.

He said that he would add one or two days to the voting period in order to allow all registered voters to take part in the elections.

Mr. Carter added that the four-day extension proposed by the SPLM was too long.

Mr. Carter proceeded to polling stations around Juba where he noticed that the process was calm although people were still struggling to find their names on the lists.

He added it was up to the National Elections Commission (NEC) to extend the voting period.

Mr. Carter said that his Center has at least 30 observers in each state of Sudan.

He mentioned that he visited forty polling stations in and around Khartoum and noticed also a delay in the distribution of polling materials.

Mr. Carter will be meeting with the GoSS president and NEC representatives while in Juba.
