The head of the UN Mission in South Sudan or INMISS has urged the government of Western Bahr El Ghazal to speed up the trials of suspects behind the violence that claimed nearly 30 lives in Wau last December over the transfer of the County headquarters.
Hilde Johnson arrived on Tuesday in Wau to discuss with the state government how to heal the wounds from violence, Voice of Hope reported.She told journalist at the state secretariat that those responsible for instigating and carrying out violence in Wau should be held accountable through due processes.
Ms Johnson presented her condolences to the families who lost loved ones in December’s violence.
She stressed that reconciliation was the only way forward to bring sustainable peace and make sure that street violence would never happen again in Wau.
Governor Rizik Zachariah Hassan said he discussed with Ms Johnson ways for reconciliation to be effective.
He said all the communities in the state need to be involved in the process.
Ms Johnson was expected to hold several meetings with the state authorities and find ways through which the UNMISS could intervene in the reconciliation process.
