Civilians in West Darfur on Wednesday started arms registration and marking of their light firearms and weapons.

The Government of Sudan expects to register approximately 30,000 arms to curb the proliferation of weapons and reduce violence in the area.

The two-day event in El Geneina, organized by the Ministry of Interior, Disarmament Demobilization and Reintegration Commission and the Bonn International Centre for Conversion brought together nearly 200 participants from governmental bodies, UNAMID said.

Diplomatic community, native administration unions, and non-governmental organizations came together to mobilize the population of the region to support the registration and marking of small arms and light weapons process.

Ten local leaders representing different tribes were among the first to register their arms.

The process of registering and marking being voluntary, but after six months non registered arms will be considered illegal.
