The summit between President Salva Kiir and President Omar Al Bashir failed to resolve the deadlock over the implementation of the cooperation agreements signed last September due to Sudan’s new demands.
Minister of the Presidency Emmanuel LoWilla told journalists upon President’s Kiir arrival at Juba International Airport on Tuesday afternoon that there was nothing much achieved in the presidential talks.He said South Sudan did not understand how the cooperation agreements could be implemented without conditions while President Bashir kept introducing new demands.
Mr LoWilla explained that Sudan is demanding a 50-50 share of seats in Abyei’s Legislative Council, while the agreement was 60 percent for South Sudan and 40 percent for Sudan as during the interim period.
He added that Sudan wanted to extend the demilitarization of Mile 14 well beyond the geographical terms agreed upon.
The Minister of the Presidency said President Kiir urged the African Union to ensure that negotiations should have a specific lifespan and if the AU could not ensure compliance it should refer the issues to UN Security Council.
Rumours circulated in Addis Ababa on Tuesday that the AU was preparing a new proposal to overcome differences about Abyei and Mile 14 issues.
