The President of the Republic issued a presidential decree on Monday sacking the Governor of Lakes State.

Salva Kiir Mayardit removed Governor Chol Tong Mayay from his post and named his deputy Mabor Achol Kuer as care-taker Governor through a presidential decree broadcasted by South Sudan TV.

The president did not give any reason for removing Eng Tong from office.

A Rumbek resident told CRN over the phone early in the morning that the town was calm and very few people were aware that the Governor was sacked over night.

This was the first time President Kiir used the power bestowed on him by the Transitional Constitution to sack elected governors when a crisis in the state threatens national security and territorial integrity.

The care-taker Governor has now 60 days to organize the election of a new Governor for Lakes State.
