Yei River County teachers on Monday were stranded at the County Headquarter when their 2009 arrears were postponed until farther notice.

The teachers were among the government workers whose salaries were not paid in 2009 and were promise to get them on Monday after a long struggle, Radio Easter reported.

However, the promise did not materialize and the teachers were told to wait until they were notified.

Samuel Latiyu Yakonye, who teaches at Ginyapoli Primary School said the teachers in the county were facing irregular payment of salaries and lack of accommodations.

He added that during the rainy season some of the teachers often missed classes due to long distances to walk.

Mr Latiyu urged the government to respond in time to teacher’s demands and give them moral support.

One teacher who did not want his name revealed said if the same things happened this year they would lay down their tools and go to support their families through other means.

The County Educational Inspector was not able to be reached for a comment of the postponement.
