401 pupils began their Primary Eight Leaving Exams on Thursday in the relatively conducive environment of Aneit School in Abyei.

Abyei Primary Schools General Director Chol Ngor Chol told Voice of Hope over the phone that there were 210 boys and 191 girls sitting for the exams.

He assured that all pupils completed their syllabus and were ready for the exams.

Senior officials of Abyei Administrative area, Abyei Legislative Council and Educationist rang the bell that marked the beginning of the exams.

Mr Ngor said the area had a huge number of school children but the education system faced many challenges despite teachers’ great dedication.

He said in May 2011, the Sudanese army raised Abyei to the ground leaving only the mosque standing. Many schools were destroyed too.

He said pupils had to attend classes under trees seating on stones or built with local materials.

Mr Ngor prayed that all the problems could be resolves by the Governments of Juba and Khartoum to raise education standards in Abyei.
