Prices in South Sudan have dropped 10.6 percent between December 2011 and December 2012 due to cheaper food and soft drinks.

The National Bureau of Statistics said in its “Consumer Price Index for South Sudan December 2012” that the annual inflation dropped to 25.2 percent after having doubled in November to 41 percent.

The decrease in the cost of living was fuelled by cheaper non-alcoholic drinks, medicines and food, especially fruits and local products.

The Bureau said prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased in Juba and Malakal and increased in Wau.

In December, Wau registered an annual inflation of 16,4 percent, Juba 21.2 percent and Malakal 26.1 percent compared with 25.2 percent for South Sudan.

Alcoholic drinks and cigarettes increased over 50 percent.

According to the Bureau’s figures prices went down in Juba and Malakal and slightly up in Wau although Wau is the region that registers the lowest annual inflation rate.
