A civil society group welcomed the news of the extension of the mandate of the National Constitutional Review Commission.

South Sudan National Legislative Assembly has called back the members of Parliament from the recess in order to deliberate on the mandate of the National Constitutional Review Commission.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy appreciated President Salva Kiir and the entire leadership for taking the extension of the Commission’s mandate as a serious matter of national priority.

The Society also appreciated the speakers of the South Sudan National Legislative Assembly and Council of States for their speedy action to call the members of the two houses back to deliberate on the important national matter.

The Society recommended the members of both houses to pass the Constitutional amendments and extend the commission’s mandate for one additional year.

It called upon the international community to assist the commission both technically and financially.

The Society urged the commission to receive any genuine help that facilitates its work towards achieving its goals of drafting a pro-people’s Constitution that will set South Sudan into the right path through democratic transformation.

It called upon the Presidency to show more continued political will and commitment towards the mandate and purpose of establishing the commission.
