Norway is urging the ruling party of South Sudan to work for a democratic and constitutional state that respects the rule of law.

Norway’s Deputy Ambassador Ine Mareng said the SPLM should embrace the rule of law and democracy in order to build a country that is owned by all South Sudanese, Bakhita Radio reported.

Ms Mareng made the call during the SPLM Leadership Round Table Discussion on Tuesday in Juba.

She urged the SPLM to adopt the Constitution, respect human rights and clinch to equity, equality, accountability and transparency – among other values of a democratic state.

The Norwegian diplomat commended the Presidents of South Sudan and Sudan for endorsing the cooperation agreements but expressed concern over delays or lack of implementation.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit said the Round Table Discussion was important because it focused on providing basic services to the citizens of South Sudan.

This was President Kiir’s first public appearance after returning from a summit in Addis Abba where he agreed with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir to endorse the cooperation agreements signed on September 27, 2012.

The conference was jointly conducted by the SPLM and the Norwegian Labour Party under the theme “Providing Leadership in building a just peaceful, prosperous and proud nation.”
