The citizens of Morobo County in Central Equatoria said article 21 subsections 1 of the Transitional Constitution should remain untouched because many people were killed during the 50 years of bloodshed in the country.
The article says that no death penalty shall be imposed, save as punishment for extremely serious offences in accordance with the law.Anthony Lupai said the article should not be revised but the age for capital punishment should be amended, Radio Easter reported.
The Transitional Constitution applies death penalty to people between 18 and 70 years of age.
Nurse Vicky Araba said people who killed intentionally should be immediately punished by execution to stop continued killing of people in the country.
Mary Dudu Warewoji supported the postponement of execution for pregnant and lactating mothers because babies are not responsible for the offences committed by their mothers.
The citizens made their comments during the Constitutional Review Process organized by the Catholic Diocese of Yei with the support with Catholic Relief Services in partnership with the National Democratic Institute in Morobo County.
