Tensions are rising among the Sudanese refugees in Yida Camp as the United Nations Agency for refugees (UNHCR) proposed a new location for the refugees in Unity State, South Sudan.

The Secretary for Social Affairs in Yida, Naida Romia Peter confirmed the proposal by the UNHCR to relocate the camp to Nyeel in Bentiu.

She said that the UN does not accept the camp in Yida due to the insecurity at the border.

Ms Romia affirmed that the UN has been instructed by the Unity State Governor Taban Deng to level the new allocated area.

Refugees rejected UN proposal to relocate the site to Nyeel claiming that the area is swampy and environmentally unfavourable for living.

They added that the site is muddy and makes access for those coming from the Nuba Mountains very difficult to reach.

Yida Camp which was opened on 27 July 2011 after the outbreak of war in South Kordofan is located 20 Km away from the border between Sudan and South Sudan.

According to the UNHCR policy, the refugees are supposed to stay 50 km away from the border of the countries they have been displaced from.
