Western Bahr El-Ghazal State has on Wednesday started 16 days of activism under the theme: “16 days of activism for peace at home to peace in the world – let us challenge militarism and violence against women”.

The occasion started with a procession from the peace square to state secretariat where messages on violence against women were delivered.

The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon message on the day was read by UNMISS State Coordinator, focusing on the elimination of violence against women.

The message stressed that the right of women and girls to live free from violence is fundamental and cannot be taken away.

Angelo Taban Biajo, State Minister for Local Government, called for the respect of women’s rights in all institutions.

He said women should enjoy equal rights as men regardless of gender.

The 16th days of activism aim at addressing issues of violence against women, early marriages, human right violations and world disable among others.

The activism days will conclude with the world AIDS Day on December 1.
