GENDER MINISTRY LAUNCHES 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

The national ministry of Gender, Child and Social Welfare on Monday launched 16 days of activism on gender based violence under the theme √É’√É’promote peace at home, stop gender based violence and child marriage”.

Addressing the occasion, Undersecretaryin the Ministry, Esther Ikere said physical, cultural, psychological and economic difficulty had greatly contributed to gender based violence in South Sudan.

She said her ministry in partnership with UN agencies will work hard to develop communication strategies that focus on gender based violence.

Ms Ikere added that the strategy will look on area of raising awareness and advocacy for public outreach.

UN Women representative Julius Otim said they are committed to support and prevent the sexual and gender based violence against women in South Sudan.

He said though it will take a long way to wipe out gender based violence from the community, a lot needs to be done.

Mr Otim added that to increase knowledge on the root causes of violence against women, several groups must come together to realise their goal.

The 16 days of activism against violence started on Monday November 25 though December 10.
