UNHCR, the UN agency for refugees, is planning to build three small camps in Unity State for refugees from South Kordofan and strengthen education.
UNHCR chief Antonio Guterres visited Yida Refugees Camp, in Unity State, with the national minister for Humanitarian Affairs Joseph Lual Acuil and Governor Taban Deng Gai on Thursday.He told journalists that Yida Ð that is home up to 60 thousand refugees Ð is a very dangerous place.
He said he strongly urged refugees to accept relocation to a better and safer place where they can be better supported.
Mr Guterres said the UNHCR wanted to build two or three new sites to hold 20 to 25 thousand refugees each in Unity State to phase Yida out.
He said new arrivals should be accommodated at new camps to be selected in the coming weeks.
Mr Guterres said South Suda is one of the most challenging refugee operations in the world due to its remoteness and tough local conditions.
Mr Guterres appealed to the international solidarity with the refugees in South Sudan.
He also thanked the Government and the local communities in Unity and Upper Nile to host around 180 thousand refugees from South Kordofan and Blue Nile.
Mr Guterres said by the end of 2013 the number of refugees in South Sudan could double.
