The Government of Western Bahr El Ghazal wants to introduce new stamp duty taxes and raise department fees in an attempt to increase revenue collection and support state activities.
Directors from state ministries and private commercial institutions attended a workshop on Monday at the State Secretariat in Wau to give suggestions to increase revenue and overcome the cash strap affecting the Government, Voice of Hope reportedState Finance Director Stephen Andrea Ugeka explained that the state’s dire financial position forced his ministry to look for alternative tax revenue sources.
He added that the workshop would review traditional sources of revenue and come with new income generating taxes.
The official said Western Bahr El Ghazal was receiving only four percent of the taxes collected by the national Government and it needed other sources of revenue including stamp duty on vehicles to get more cash.
Mr Ugeka explained that the national government collected income, sales and business profit taxes while the states kept stamp duty taxes and department fees.
He said the State Government was revising the fees for the services given by its departments.
The proposed charges are expected to pass through the state parliament and to be effective before the New Year.
