No one was hurt when a chartered plane flying returnees from Khartoum to Aweil, in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, ended out of the runway on Friday evening.
IOM, the International Organization for Migration, is airlifting 1,270 returnees from Khartoum to Aweil.IOM official Samantha Donkin told CRN over the phone that there were 61 people on board, including three crew and one IOM staff, and the plane veered off the runway during landing procedures.
She said one woman and two children were taken to the local hospital for observation and all were found well.
The whole group left for Wau on Saturday morning.
Ms Donking explained that the aircraft was damaged and the airlift operation was suspended until the IOM chartered another plane.
The airstrip remained opened to air traffic.
Ms Donking said with yesterday’s flight over 1,020 people were airlifted to Aweil.
Two-hundred and fifty people are still waiting in Khartoum for a flight home.
Ms Donking said the Government of Sudan estimates that there are 240,000 South Sudanese still in the country.
She added that 2,700 people are stranded in Kosti waiting to be taken to South Sudan but the river transport between the two countries is still stopped.
